Passenger increase for Viking Line

During the calendar year 2009, a total of 6,399,924 passengers travelled on Viking Line. Passenger figures rose by 199,245 or 3.2 per cent on all routes. The largest growth was achieved in service to Estonia and on the Mariehamn (Åland Islands, Finland) – Kapellskär (Sweden) route. The number of cars grew by 14.9 per cent during the year to 611,982. Cargo volume rose by a total of 7 per cent. In a shrinking market, this represented an increase in cargo market share of 5.2 percentage points.

Services on Viking Line routes

During calendar 2009, 1,586,933 passengers rode the Viking XPRS on the Helsinki (Finland) − Tallinn (Estonia) route, or 191,580 (+13.7%) more than the year before. The number of cars climbed by 50.4 per cent.
On the short route across the Sea of Åland, that is, between Mariehamn and Kapellskär, passenger volume on the m/s Rosella rose from 625,393 to 733,121 or by 107,728 (+17.2%). The number of cars rose by 16.1 per cent.
Passenger volume on the Turku (Finland) – Åland Islands – Stockholm (Sweden) route aboard the Isabella and the Amorella decreased by 2.5 per cent to 1,944,022, but the number of cars rose by 1.0 per cent.
On the Helsinki − Stockholm route, the number of passengers was 1,138,987. This represented an increase of 0.7 per cent compared to the year before. The Mariella underwent a major dry-docking during the period September 6-18, 2009, including an upgrading of public spaces.
Passenger volume on cruises from Stockholm aboard the m/s Cinderella was 996,861. Compared to the previous year, this was a decrease of 5.5 per cent. The Cinderella underwent a major dry-docking during the period May 31-June 18, 2009, including extensive renovation work in its restaurants, night club, bars and other public spaces.

“The growth in passenger figures is connected to the investments we have undertaken in quality-raising measures, which is also indicated in our customer surveys,” says Boris Ekman, Executive Vice President.
