Children have a special status in Stockholm, and the city is particularly
well adapted to the needs of the entire family. Restaurants, museums, hotels,
department stores and other facilities offer special options and attractions for
the children, which makes the experiences more enjoyable for every family
member.
High chairs in restaurants, ramps for prams in the Stockholm underground and
rooms for eating packed lunches in museum are virtually taken for granted in
Stockholm. The city and its surrounding areas are both fun and convenient to
visit with the children.
Stockholm's museums and other attractions arrange activities for children and
young people in the form of tours and different workshops - some of which are
designed to appeal especially to a young audience.
Skansen, an open air museum for
the entire family, is Stockholm's largest and most popular attraction and was
established as early as 1891. This cultural-history park contains 150 buildings
of historical interest, including houses, farms, running workshops and special
historical scenes. Wildlife typical of Scandinavia, such as elk, wolves and
bears, can be seen in the park, while the Skansen Aquarium features exotic
snakes and primates. Lill-Skansen is a children's zoo with goat kids, hedgehogs,
small pigs, ducks and kittens.

"The Vasa" is an almost
entirely preserved rigged warship from the seventeenth century. The smell of
tarred timber, exhibitions, multimedia and interesting artefacts that were
rescued from the ship can all be found in the Vasa Museum, which fascinates
visitors of all ages. www.vasamuseet.se
Discover the magical world of stories at Junibacken
- a place just bubbling with things to do and see, adventure and
mischief. In the centre of it all is the story train - a journey into the
storybook world of Astrid Lindgren. Story train rides are available in Swedish,
English, German, Dutch and Finnish. www.junibacken.se
At the Museum of Science and Technology
in Stockholm, there are as many interesting gadgets outside the museum as
inside. In the creative workshop, you can use a computer to create your own
music, whether this be hip-hop, pop or country. It's up to you. www.tekniskamuseet.se
In the Swedish Museum of Natural History you
can learn about the Swedish nature and wild animals. At Cosmonova,
beside the Museum of Natural History, five different films are shown in the
world's largest film format - Omnimax. www2.nrm.se
If you are willing to venture a bit outside Stockholm, you might try playing "Beep
and Drive" at the new Boxcar Land (Lådbilslandet) in
Nykvarn. The speed limit is 4 km per hour. Children between the ages of 2 and 10
can even apply for a driver's licence. If you get tired of driving the
boxcars, there are plenty of other activities, such as merry-go-rounds, moon
walks and miniature trains. www.nykvarn.com/ladbilslandet
