Sweden has four distinct seasons which differ depending on where you are in the country. The following applies to Stockholm:

Winter: December through March. Winters can be snowy and cold. Count on temperatures from +2C to +7C.

Spring: April and May. Varying weather conditions. Usually scattered showers and sunshine. Large differences between daytime and night-time temperatures, ranging from +5C to +15C.

Summer: June through August. Swedish summers are considerably warmer than their reputation. Often long periods with very warm and sunny weather. Temperatures up to +25C or more. The light is special during the summer. The days are very long and the nights are short. It never gets really dark during the early summer (June and July).

Language

The official language in Sweden is Swedish. English is compulsory in school from the age of 10, so most Swedes speak good English. German, French and Spanish are also studied in school, although they are less frequently spoken than English.

Right of access to open country

This unique Swedish public right, called Allemansrätten, allows everyone to walk freely through the countryside, and camp for one night in the forests and countryside without a permit. It also places serious responsibility upon each individual to protect the countryside. There are many restrictions intended to prevent damage.

Time zone

GMT + 1 hour. Daylight saving time begins at the end of March and lasts until the end of October.

Tips

Tips and service charge are included in all prices at hotels and restaurants and in taxis. If you want to show your appreciation for good service, leave a small tip (approximately 10%) anyway.
